I was born in Louisville, Kentucky in 1965. I grew up in the
South End of Louisville, attending Beechmont Elementary School,
Lowell Elementary School, Noe Middle School and duPont Manual
High School. I graduated from the University of Louisville
with a degree in Electrical Engineering.
I have an older brother, Mike, who lives a few
miles North of Louisville. He's married, no kids, but has a
bunch of pets.
My father was an Air Traffic Controller at
Godman Army Airfield in Ft. Knox, Ky. He died in 1992 from
congestive heart failure and complications from diabetes. He
was born in New Albany, was a member of the USAF and fought in the
Korean war.
My mother was born in Dillon, South
Carolina. She met my dad in Washington, DC, where they both
lived for a time. She moved with him back to Louisville, where
they raised my brother and me. My mom died in 1997 from lung
cancer.
Both my parents smoked all their lives and ultimately died young because of it. As a result, I have a pretty pissy attitude about smoking. Anyone who smokes needs to go hang out at the hospital for a few months with someone dying from lung cancer.
I've always been involved with technology in a creative way. I started running television cameras in middle school. It was about the same time that I started getting into still photography.
My first job in television was when I was 16 years old. I worked at WKPC-TV/15, a PBS station in Louisville. I worked for WKPC all through high school and some of college. During college, I interned at Northern Telecom in Raleigh, North Carolina.
While in North Carolina, I bought my first real still camera - a Nikon 2020. It helped pass the time while I was away from my friends. At Northern Telecom, I made friends with a couple of coworkers who flew airplanes for fun. We spent weekends flying to weird places for dinner. That, combined with my Dad's career as an air traffic controller really hooked me on getting my pilot's license.
During college, I never managed to save enough money for flying lessons. When my Dad passed away in 1992, he left me a little money. I took part of that money and spent it on flying lessons. I thought it was very appropriate.
